Improved Sanitary Facilities for Tivoli Gardens

Residents of Tivoli Gardens in Western Kingston will soon have improved sanitary facilities, as Cabinet has approved a $70 million contract to effect the development.

Speaking on September 12 Jamaica House press briefing, Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, informed that the work will include the demolition of structurally unsound sanitation blocks and the building of 51 new, well-ventilated structures equipped with water closets; and construction of new manholes.

Miss Falconer said the contract will also cover the connection of the new blocks to the existing sewer system.

"There is an urgent need to address the poor conditions under which residents live due to the runoff from the existing facilities. They have had to suffer from persistent bad odour and unhygienic conditions," she said.

The project is being funded through a grant from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), which is supporting the implementation of projects under the Basic Need Trust Fund.

The contract was approved by the National Contracts Commission and the Ministry of Finance and Planning.
