The Full Story

A sum of $244.41 million has been allocated to fund the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Project, under the Ministry of Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce.
This provision has been made in the 2007/08 Estimates of Expenditure, tabled in the House of Representatives yesterday (March 29), by the Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Omar Davies.
The project, which will be implemented by the Government of Jamaica, seeks to contribute to Jamaica’s e-readiness and to support the development of the ICT sector in order to increase competitiveness, diversify exports and expand productive employment.
It also seeks to promote enhanced efficiency and access, thereby reducing transaction cost and increasing ICT use in the private/public sectors and civil society. Achievements to date are: the training of Government of Jamaica employees in spectrum management; establishment of computer facilities at revenue centres for public access to pay taxes; establishment of three community access points in marginalized communities; development and launch of e-Government website and the public Key Infrastructure project document completed and approved.
Targets for the new fiscal year include the establishment of 20 community access points; re-engineering of government’s revenue process; procurement of equipment to support government revenue process online; revision of government standards and training of personnel in implementation; acquisition of equipment for Public Key Infrastructure and to provide ICT training programme for legislators and the judiciary. The project is funded by the Government and the Inter-American Development Bank and is scheduled to be completed by June 2009.
