Hurricane Victims in Portland Cottage get Help from German Government

Building materials and supplies valued at about $4 million have been donated to the residents of Portland Cottage in Clarendon by the German Government.
The beneficiaries were severely affected by Hurricane Ivan, which devastated the island on September 10. The handing over ceremony took place yesterday (December 13), in the community.
In a JIS News interview, Dr. Christian Hausmann, German Ambassador to Jamaica explained that the assistance consisted of roofing materials and lumber, adding that the beneficiaries were expected to play an integral part in the reconstruction of their homes.
“The beneficiaries are expected to contribute by giving labour. Most of the people can repair their homes themselves. Who cannot might have some family who can assist them,” he said.
The funding was channeled through the Adventist Disaster Relief Agency (ADRA), which was instrumental in procuring the building materials locally.
Persons received letters of commitment to procure the materials at a hardware store in May Pen.
Some 140 families in the Portland Cottage community will benefit from the donation.
