Minster of Water and Housing, Dr. Horace Chang yesterday (Sept. 3), presented cheques valued at $1.3 million, to Food for the Poor’s Gloria’s Place Cottage for Women and Children in Crisis, and the St. Peter Claver Women’s Housing Cooperative.
The presentation was made at the Minister’s New Kingston office. The Minister was responding to a call for assistance from both organisations, which along with their other activities, help to provide housing for children in crisis, battered women and disaster victims.
“The Ministry wants to do more work with both St. Peter Claver and Food for the Poor,” Minister Chang said. “I was moved by the request. Although the amount of money requested was not large, it is very important that we do this and reach out to the most vulnerable in the society,” he added.
Dr. Chang said that while the amount of money requested by the organisation was not significant, he was happy that the presentation served as a way to bring some publicity to the work they are doing. He encouraged both organisations to stay in touch with the Ministry, to ensure that future cooperation takes place, where possible.
Also participating in the presentation was the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water and Housing, Genefa Hibbert, who said that the Ministry was pleased to make the contribution.
“We are happy to be part of your initiative and this small token will benefit those people who you assist,” she said.
Thanking the Ministry for its contribution were Manager of Education and Outreach for Food for the Poor, Pearline Barrett, and Chairman of the Board of St. Peter Claver Women’s Housing Co-operative, Shirley Tucker, who received the cheques on behalf of their organisations.
