March 31, 2010

The Full Story

Almost $11 million has been set aside in the 2010/11 Estimates of Expenditure to facilitate the continuation of a Household Expenditure Survey by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN).
The project initially ran between November 2004 and December, 2008 contributing to an enhanced process of economic and social decision making.
It guarantees implementation of an updated model for compilation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), to more effectively direct the country’s economic policy and, in the process, and produce a high quality database for dissemination among researchers.
Several activities have been executed since its commencement. These include: a Household Expenditure Survey, conducted between June, 2004 and March, 2005; introduction of a CPI in September, 2007, resulting in a programme for the compilation of a monthly CPI based on a new basket of items; launch of a revised CPI in September, 2007; and completion of a socio-economic analysis of the Household Expenditure Survey.
It also contributed the provision of a micro data set of Household Expenditure Surveys to the Derek Gordon Databank, University of the West Indies (UWI), which will serve as a repository for the utilization of the survey among local and international researchers.
Anticipated targets for 2010/11 include: a pilot to test technology used in collating data and associated data processing on the labour force survey undertaken; and evaluation and financial audit of the Household Expenditure Survey.
The project, which has been extended to June, is being funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB),
