The Full Story

President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), Wayne Cummings has disclosed that five hotels are expected to participate in the ‘Tourism Village’ at this year’s staging of the Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial Show to be held in May Pen, Clarendon.
“Last year we did not have as much participation from the hotels as we would like, but this year we started early and while some hotels have already confirmed, we are still waiting for final confirmation from others,” the JHTA President told JIS News on Thursday (July 24). “Preparations are however far advanced and we are expecting five hotels,” he confirmed.
Mr. Cummings explained that this opportunity is critical to the partnership between the agricultural and tourism sectors.
“The tourism village is an indication of the partnership between tourism and agriculture. We want to ensure that this critical partnership remains stronger than it has ever been before,” he explained.
In addition, Mr. Cummings said that the tourism sector is committed in its support for the agricultural sector and will be ensuring that persons are able to see the linkages between the sectors.
“The JAS has provided the Tourist Board with the opportunity to showcase their products and we are committed to supporting this show,” he assured. This year’s Tourism Village will be sponsored by the Jamaica Agricultural Society, the Tourism Enhancement Fund, and the Jamaica Tourist Board.
According to Mr. Cummings, the hotel sector will have up to 10 booths in the ‘village’, showcasing how the sector utilizes the agricultural product but more importantly they will be providing services for patrons.
According to the JHTA President patrons can expect to learn a lot from the tourism village. “We will have ten booths doing food and beverages, so there will be beverages made from different fruits and food for persons to sample made from locally grown produce, but more importantly we will be giving information on our sector to Jamaican farmers and how we partner and share with the agricultural sector,” he informed.
The Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial Show is an annual event that has been embedded in the unique culture and the broad fabric of the Jamaican farmer since 1953.
