Heritage Trust Creating Preservation Plan for Seville Site

The Full Story

The Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) is in the process of creating a preservation plan that will enable Jamaicans to realize the full potential of the Seville Heritage Exhibition Site in St. Ann.
The Seville Heritage Park has been officially reopened, following its closure in November last year to repair damage caused by Hurricane Ivan.
The repair work included rebuilding and repairing damaged structures and upgrading the exhibits.
Speaking at the official reopening ceremony, held on Tuesday, February 15 Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture, Noel Monteith, said “we are reopening an exhibition that details over 1,000 years of history associated with this site. It is a history that is rich and colourful. It is a history that tells the story of our people.”
Noting that Seville provided the ideal attributes of being a major heritage education centre and heritage tourism site, Mr. Monteith said that Jamaicans should strive to effectively promote the location as much as possible.
“As an education centre, it gives teachers the perfect opportunity to expand their classrooms by taking their students on a field trip to learn first hand historical details that are part of their curriculum,” he explained.
He pointed out that Seville, being an important resource in the development of heritage tourism in Jamaica, had a lot to offer in terms of attraction for visitors to the Island.
“The refurbishing and upgrading of the exhibition is just the first phase in the JNHT’s development plan for Seville. The full potential of Seville is yet to be realized and we hope to achieve this through further development,” he said.
Commending the members of the Seville Advisory Committee, Mr. Monteith said that the Committee had been very supportive in the development process of Seville and urged their continued support in helping to preserve Jamaica’s Heritage.
He congratulated the JNHT and the Seville Staff for playing a very important role in maintaining the site and for introducing visitors to Jamaican history.
