Henry Discusses Vending Issues with May Pen’s Mayor

Member of Parliament (MP) for Central Clarendon, Hon Mike Henry, met with Mayor of May Pen, Councillor Milton Brown, to discuss a number of issues in respect of street vending and the operations of the May Pen Market on Friday (October 8).

Mr. Henry, who is also the Transport and Works Minister, called for the meeting with the Mayor, as a matter of urgency, on Thursday (October 7). He met with Mr. Brown at his Ministry, where they held constructive dialogue on the way forward for the market, and a number of other vendor-related issues.
The Minister, noting his appreciation of the Mayor’s prompt response, said the move has paved the way for a consensual approach to solving the problems that have dogged the market for some time. He said his discussions with Mr. Brown included a number of ideas aimed at resolving the whole matter of the operational challenges at the market, and the link with street vending in the town centre.
The MP said that plans are being discussed to complement a public transportation plan being developed, along with other public order initiatives being employed to bring back civility to the town.
He said another meeting between himself and the Mayor is being scheduled for May Pen, as well as a tour of the market and its environs.
The physical condition of sections of the market has been a longstanding bone of contention among vendors there. Security concerns, which have periodically emerged, have also resurfaced. All these matters are to be jointly addressed by the MP and the Parish Council, led by Mayor Brown.
“I am very pleased with the Mayor’s response, and we are jointly working to resolve the problems which have been with us for some time,” Mr. Henry said.
