Residents of western Jamaica are now participating in an Entrepreneurial Exposition being staged by the HEART Trust/NTA on October 12 and 13, at the West Jamaica Conference Centre, in Mount Salem, Montego Bay.
The Entrepreneurial Expo is being held under the theme ‘Seizing Opportunities, Creating Wealth through Self-employment’ and targets students at the secondary and tertiary levels, as well as potential and existing entrepreneurs in the parishes of St. Ann, Trelawny, St. James, Hanover, Westmoreland and sections of St. Elizabeth.
According to Manager, Entrepreneurial Skills Development Unit, at the HEART Trust/NTA, Clive Grosett, the Montego Bay Expo is the second such event to be held across the island by the organization. The first was hosted in Kingston, at the Jamaica Conference Centre earlier this year. Mr. Grosett explained that the expositions are being held with specific aims and objectives.
“The main objectives of these expositions are: to foster and encourage a culture of entrepreneurship in our society, to sensitize potential and existing entrepreneurs to new business opportunities, and to present strategies that foster growth and development of entrepreneurship,” he said.
He noted however that there were peculiarities with regard to the presentations in the expo held in Kingston and the one held in Montego Bay, as the Montego Bay event was structured to suit the economic environment within the west.
Giving the keynote address at the opening ceremony for the Montego Bay expo, President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), Horace Peterkin, encouraged the participants to always strive to create wealth off their own volition, and to seek and seize opportunities that came their way and make the best of them.
He emphasized the importance of training and certification, for persons and businesses to be able to compete in the international arena, which he said would be the level at which all Jamaicans would be competing, with the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy.
“Whatever field you chose…you will find that knowledge of the product and ability to provide the required service will stand you in good stead,” he stated.
He noted that being an entrepreneur carried significant responsibilities as well as benefits. “I will tell you that being an entrepreneur gives you lots, gives you pride, it gives you the ability to influence and develop others, it gives you a chance to help to build the nation, and of course it gives you a chance to become extremely wealthy,” he said. More than 700 persons are expected to attend the expo on each day.
