Health Minister Says Studies Justify Children’s Hospital in the West

July 12, 2012

The Full Story

Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson, says that Epidemiology studies have been completed and the results have justified the decision to establish a state-of-the art Child and Adolescent Hospital in western Jamaica.

"We have identified the land, finalised the preliminary design and the costing for this project. This project will become a National Centre of Excellence and an example of best practise for public-private partnerships,” Dr. Ferguson said.

The Minister was speaking during his contribution to the 2012/13 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives, on July 11.

Dr. Ferguson pointed out that the plan for the children’s hospital was one of the agenda items in the People’s National Party (PNP) general election manifestos of 2007 and 2011.

The Bustamante Hospital for Children is the only specialist children’s hospital in the English speaking Caribbean and caters to patients from birth to 12 years.

It provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic, preventative, curative, rehabilitative and ambulatory services offered in paediatric medical and surgical specialties and sub-specialties.
