The Full Story

Hanover is to commemorate the 124th anniversary of the birth of National Hero, The Right Excellent Sir Alexander Bustamante, with a Remembrance Service at Blenheim, the district of his birth, on Sunday, February 24.
The service, which begins at 12 noon, will be staged by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), in collaboration with the Hanover Parish Council.
Regional Manager for the JCDC’s Western Region, Marjorie Vernon, told JIS News that Prime Minister Bruce Golding will deliver a special message; the welcome will be extended by Mayor of Lucea, Councillor Lloyd Hill; and greetings from Acting Custos of Hanover, Enid Gonsalves, and a representative from the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU).
She also noted that a message will be presented by Pastor of the Brownsville United Church and Chairman of the Hanover Ministers’ Fraternal, Rev. Royland Thompson.
“We have put together what we believe is a very exciting and unusual programme, one that will make everyone proud to be a Jamaican. We have pulled together some of our best talents in the parish and out of the region. We also have the collaboration of the Ministers’ Fraternal in Hanover, they are playing a big role, along with our civic leaders,” Mrs. Vernon said.
On the cultural aspect of the planned programme, she pointed out that there would be a number of performances from different groups. “These will include Rusea’s High School. They will do a tribute in song entitled, ‘We are Jamaicans’. We will also have two outstanding church bands and choirs. To lively up the afternoon, because we begin at 12 noon, we will have the Hartford Folk and Cultural Group out of Westmoreland, and they will do a cultural potpourri of traditional pieces,” she said. She appealed to all residents in western Jamaica to make an effort to attend the event.
