The scholarship, which is valued at $111,000, will be for a duration of five years depending on the performance of the recipient, with the possibility of an extension to cover schooling at the sixth form and tertiary levels.
Among the expenses that the scholarship will cover are school fee, the procurement of uniforms and books, lunch money and bus fare.
The scholarship is being administered by an appointed committee of the Board of Governors of the Shirley Castle Primary School.
Some of the performance criteria recipients have to meet in order to continue to benefit from the scholarship are: the maintenance of a ‘B’ average for each term, at least a 90 per cent school attendance during the academic year, involvement in extra-curricular activities and strict adherence to school rules.
In an interview with JIS News, St. Clair Shirley, Chairman of Hylton Shirley Estate Limited, said his organization was happy to be able to provide the scholarship, as it was fully cognisant of the importance of education in the development of the country.
Commending the recipient for her performance in the GSAT examination, Mr. Shirley encouraged her to continue to aim for excellence as she pursued her educational development.
Deandrea told JIS News that she was grateful to Hylton Shirley Estate for the assistance, and gave an assurance that she would make every effort to perform well at high school.
