Ground Broken for Transportation Centre in Linstead

The Full Story

Ground was broken on July 24 for the building of a modern Transportation Centre in Linstead, St. Catherine, at a projected cost of $25 million. The centre is expected to be completed in November, and will be a smaller version of the centre under construction at Half-Way-Tree in Kingston.
Minister of Housing, Transport, Water and Works, Robert Pickersgill who officially broke ground for the building, said the provision of a modern, safe, reliable and efficient transport system was critical to the growth and development of any community and the economy. “Additionally, a well organized public transportation system contributes to improvement in the social life and living conditions of all,” he said.
Mr. Pickersgill pointed out that a modern transportation centre not only contributed to job creation, but facilitated increased mobility and a reliable and efficient transport service.
The first phase of construction will include the stripping, clearing, fencing and grading of the site; the building of storm-water drains; the laying of potable water and sewage disposal pipes; and the building of curbs.
The second phase will involve the construction of a covered waiting area; pedestrian walkways; concession area; sanitary conveniences; a security post and an office for the taxi association.
When completed, the new transportation centre will accommodate 450 taxis and 53 buses. “This does not mean that all 450 taxis and buses will use the centre at once. Rather, use of the centre will be guided by a scheduling system and fees will be charged for use of the centre,” the Minister said.
He also called on operators to “act in a lawful and professional manner, to wear uniforms and identification badges, and to operate clearly marked vehicles,” he added.
The Minister called on illegal taxi operators to get regularized, as both the Transport Authority and the Police were committed to ensuring professional and legal conduct in the transport sector in Linstead.
