Ground Broken for Road Project In Flanker, St. James

Ground was broken yesterday (Feb. 5) for the rehabilitation of the Red Dirt Road, in the community of Flanker in St. James.
The $13 million project is being carried out by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), under its Inner City Basic Services Project. As part of the condition for funding, the community will contribute $830,000 in services, which represents 11 per cent of the project cost.
Board Member at JSIF, Yvonne Fredericks, in her address at the ground breaking ceremony, said that the project, which should be completed in six months, would help to enhance the quality of life of community members.
“New roads are not just about getting from point A to point B in the shortest and safest way. Important as these benefits are.with the delivery of each new road, a community or region becomes a better place to live, a better place to work and a better place to visit,” she stated.
She said that the project reflects a community/public partnership, which is the hallmark of JSIF’s interventions, and expressed the agency’s commitment to continue to implement programmes to benefit the underserved across the island.
Mayor of Montego Bay and Councillor for the Flanker Division, Charles Sinclair, praised community members for their efforts to improve the roadway.
Describing the community as one of the best in St. James, he assured the JSIF representatives and the contractor that the residents would give their fullest cooperation towards seeing the contract to completion.
Councillor Sinclair noted that the improvement of the roadway would lead to better services being rendered to the community especially from agencies such as the police, the parish council, and the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).
