Prime Minister, the Most. Hon. Andrew Holness, has assured members of the Jamaican diaspora in the United States that the government is leaving no stone unturned in tackling crime.
“I want to assure you that the Government has put in place several crime-fighting measures and national security strategies that are all working to ensure the safety and security of all Jamaicans,” he said.
He was addressing a special reception held in his honour at the Jamaican Consulate in New York on Tuesday (September 25).
Mr. Holness told the gathering that the Government is providing the necessary resources to ensure that the security forces are fully equipped and capable of fighting crime.
He said that the introduction of the state of public emergency in sections of the island will help to restore confidence in the country.
The Prime Minister lauded members of the diaspora for their contributions to the country over the years, particularly in the areas of health and education.
“The country is indebted to you for your selfless contributions, and it is heartening that, while you reside in the United States, you have not forgotten Jamaica,” he said.
The Prime Minister further encouraged them to take advantage of the various investment opportunities in the island.
“We need to have members of the diaspora investing in their own country. This is an opportune time for you to look to Jamaica to invest in, as we’re open for business,” he said.
“The Government is committed to ensuring that Jamaica remains attractive for investment opportunities,” he added.
Mr. Holness, who is leading Jamaica’s delegation to the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, met with members of the diaspora and updated them on various developments in the island.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith; Health Minister, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton; and Senator Matthew Samuda, also attended the meeting, which was hosted by Jamaica’s Consul General to New York, Trudy Deans.
