GOVT. to Spend $273.6 Million on Enhancement of Basic Schools Project

The Government will be spending $273.6 million on the Enhancement of Basic Schools project for the 2008/09 financial year.
The sum, which has been set aside in the 2008/09 Estimates of Expenditure, is now before the House of Representatives.
For the financial year, the project seeks to complete the construction of the following schools and resource centres: St. Catherine Resource Centre, Trelawny Resource Centre and the Stephen James Basic School.
The project is also aiming to commence construction on the following schools and centres – the Shortwood Infant school, Highgate Basic and Resource Centre and the St. Francis Infant Department.
Other targets for the 2008/09 financial year include furnishing and equipping Fern Grove and Shortwood Basic Schools; completing pre contract work for Package 3 sites; commencing public education consultancy; completing articulation consultancy and completing the new learning environment consultancies.
Up to February 2008, the programme was able to establish a project implementation unit; collected and analysed baseline data; completed islandwide sensitization workshops on the new learning environment and also completed renovation and construction of the Manchester Resource Centre, the DRB Grant Basic School and the St. James Resource Centre.
The project, which had an original duration from April 2002 to September 2006, has been extended from September 2006 to December 2008. It is funded jointly by the Government and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).
