The Full Story

Minister with responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Hon. Daryl Vaz, has said that the Government wants to ensure that all Jamaicans benefit from the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
He said that ICT, an umbrella term for communication devices or applications, including radio, television, cellular phones, computer and network hardware and software, can be used as a means of enhancing the quality of life of Jamaicans
“Together, let us utilise this important mechanism to expand knowledge, drive growth, improve living standards, and empower our people,” he told a ceremony to launch the Jamaica Yellow Pages’ new Online Business Directory, at the Terra Nova All-Suites Hotel in Kingston, on Thursday (March 18).
The Minister also stated that it “cannot be business and usual”, particularly in the information age, which demands that individuals move swiftly to reap ICT benefits.
“Now, through ICT, I cannot only create my own advertisement, but I can pick up details on the market trends, see how my competitor is faring, launch new products, track inventories, re-order supplies, pay taxes…and open the garage door and turn on my lights, all from the cell phone,” he pointed out.
“The point is, we can do so much more today in a shorter space of time, with less resources, all facilitated by technology, and it starts with being able to see the opportunities,” he said.
The Minister also stressed Government’s commitment to facilitating widespread use of ICT, in both the private and public sectors, in the delivery of services and improving citizens’ access to the use of online services.
“Technology is the present and future, and I’m working to ensure that we will all embrace it,” he said.
