April 3, 2008

The Full Story

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has been allocated $54.2 million in the 2008/09 Estimates of Expenditures, now before the House of Representatives, for a new building.
The purpose of the project is to provide customized office facilities for the Ministry, which will adequately support its needs in terms of accommodation for staff, meeting and conference facilities and waiting areas for diplomats and other visitors; to contribute to the redevelopment of downtown Kingston by virtue of the relocation of the Ministry to that area; and to obviate the cost to Government arising from a high level of office rental in New Kingston, where the Ministry is currently located.
The project will begin in April 2008 and last until December 2010. The targets for 2008/09 include the purchasing of land; completing geological assessment and architectural surveys; finishing feasibility studies, and concluding the design phase.
The project is being funded by the Government and a grant from the Government of the People’s Republic of China.
