Gov’t Allocates $18.5 Million to Ease Drought Conditions

Minister of Land and Environment, Dean Peart has said that a sum of $18. 5 million will be allocated to address the needs of communities affected by drought conditions, which has been affecting the island.
Minister Peart, who was addressing journalists at the post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House on March 15, said that 11 parishes have been affected so far and the funds would be dispatched immediately. The allocation will be monitored by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).
Meanwhile, a monitoring committee comprised of representatives from the Ministries of Land and Environment, Water and Housing, Local Government, Community Development and Sport and ODPEM, has been established to continue the assessment and response to the drought situation.
In addition, Minister Peart informed that Cabinet had approved $11 million to the Ministry of Housing to repair the rapid response trucks to bring the fleet up to 95, so as to provide water to the affected areas.
Minister Peart said, “we are hoping that the fleet will be up by the end of the week”.The parishes affected by the drought are Clarendon, Westmoreland, St. Mary, St. James, Trelawny, Hanover, Manchester, St. Ann, St. Catherine,St. Thomas and parts of St. Elizabeth.
