Gov’t Allocates $121 Million to 4-H Clubs for 2007/08

The government has allocated $121 million to the Jamaica 4-H Clubs for the 2007/2008 financial year.The subvention, which is a $21 million increase over the $100 million allocated in 2006/07, will enable the organization to carry out youth training and development activities for the current fiscal period. Chairman of the Jamaica 4 H-Clubs, Senator Norman Grant, in his remarks at the press launch of the 4-H Clubs’ National Achievement Day 2007 in Kingston yesterday (April 11), said that the government has invested more than $600 million in young people through the 4-H movement over the past seven years.
“We here in the movement see this as a clear endorsement in the work of the 4-H Clubs and a clear indication that the government is committed to the development of our youth,” Senator Grant stated.
In addition to the allocation from government, the movement has raised $400 million in grants, contribution and sponsorship.
More than 60,000 young people between the ages of nine and 25 year are members of the island-wide network of the Jamaica 4-H Clubs.
The movement promotes self-reliance, self-help and initiative through training, and facilitates the development of skills in agriculture, home economics and leadership.
National Achievement Day will take place from April 25 to 27 at the Denbigh showground in Clarendon. The three-day event is an exposition of all the products and projects created by clubbites in the past year.
