Governor General’s Message for Civil Service Week

November 21, 2011

The Full Story

I am pleased to join the Heads of Ministries, Agencies and Departments and employees in the public sector in the observance of Civil Service Week 2011 under the theme: "Civil Servants – Repositioning for National Development."

Reflection, renewal and repositioning are characteristic features of successful organisations.  In 1962 when Jamaica achieved independence there was a heightened sense of enthusiasm, anticipation and determination to work together to build a Jamaica of which succeeding generations could be proud.  Now almost fifty years later, it is time for us to reflect on our achievements thus far and reposition where necessary, in order to fulfill our national development goals.

It is therefore commendable that at this milestone in our national history, civil servants are focusing their attention on determining the right strategies that may be implemented to enable Jamaica to achieve its development goals.  May your discussions be guided by a commitment to work ethics, values and morals that are the hallmark of the public sector we envision to effect good governance.

As the sacrifices of our National Heroes bore the fruits of Independence, it is the hope that the investment you make in repositioning the civil service will reap rich dividends for national development.

Best wishes for a successful week of activities.
