Governments of Jamaica and China to Sign Bilateral Agreements

The Governments of Jamaica and China are expected to sign a number of agreements covering the areas of agriculture, finance, education and infrastructural development, with the visit of the Vice President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping.
The Chinese Vice President is expected to arrive in the island tomorrow evening at the start of a four day official visit from Feb 11-14, 2009. He will arrive at the Norman Manley International Airport and will be met by Prime Minister Bruce Golding and other Government Officials, as well as members of the Chinese business community.
The Vice President will participate in a very hectic schedule of activities. He will pay a courtesy call on the Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Honourable Professor Sir Kenneth Hall, meet with the President of the Senate, Oswald Harding and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Delroy Chuck; and also the staff of the Chinese Embassy and representatives of Chinese companies in Jamaica.
Mr. Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Golding will hold discussions at Jamaica House on bilateral and multilateral issues, after which there will be a signing of agreements followed by a press briefing. Other activities will include meeting with the Leader of the Opposition, Portia Simpson Miller and attending a dinner hosted by the Prime Minister.
Mr. Jinping will also meet with the Principal of the Mona Campus, University of the West Indies, where a presentation of a plaque for the Confucius Institute will take place. In Montego Bay, St. James, he will meet with the Mayor, Councillor Charles A. Sinclair, Jr., and will be presented with the Key to the second City.
A highlight of the visit will be the groundbreaking ceremony for the Convention Centre, which is being funded by the Government of China.
The Chinese Vice President departs Feb. 14 for an official visit to Colombia.
