June 24, 2009

The Full Story

The Government is to set up a multi-sectoral committee, to handle all issues related to the outbreak of the H1N1 virus in the island.
The committee will comprise the Chief Technical Officers in the Ministries of Health, Education, Agriculture and Fisheries, Tourism, and Information.
Making the announcement at Wednesday (June 24) the post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Information and Telecommunications, Hon. Daryl Vaz, said the Government is thankful for assistance from Mexico, and the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) through their respective donations of 3,000 treatment doses of Tamiflu and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machine, to the national influenza centre at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
Mr. Vaz reiterated that the Government is monitoring the situation, and stressed that there is no need for panic. He noted that the acquisition of the PCR machine would assist greatly with the length of time between testing and diagnosis. To date, some 19 cases of the virus have been detected in the island.
Turning to other matters, the Minister informed that Cabinet gave the go ahead for the award of a contract of just under $1.2 billion for the upgrading of the Washington Boulevard/Dunrobin Avenue roadway. The work will be carried out by Surrey Paving and Aggregates Limited.
