The Full Story

Their Excellencies Governor-General, Professor Kenneth Hall, and Mrs. Rheima Holding Hall, yesterday (May 24) led a team of Government officials including Finance and Planning Minister, Dr. Omar Davies and Minister of Tourism, Entertainment and Culture, Aloun Assamba, on an extensive tour of infrastructure development works at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay.
The tour also saw the Governor General’s led team visiting the luxurious Palmyra Resorts, Shoppes of Rosehall, the site of the Montego Bay Convention Centre, White Witch Villa Developments and the Iberostar Hotel construction. The team will also examine the progress being made on the North Coast Highway.
Minister Assamba told JIS News that the tour was planned in order for Their Excellencies to have a first hand experience of the level of developments now taking place in the island, as the country braces itself for economic growth and a brighter future.
“We thought that this would be an excellent opportunity for His Excellency and Her Excellency to see exactly what is happening on the ground as we move forward in this level of development now taking place on the North Coast. Of course they will also get an opportunity to see the North Coast Highway, which is well on its way to completion,” the Tourism Minister informed.
Meanwhile, Dr. Davies said he was excited about the tour and the possible implications for the country’s economy because of infrastructural developments such as the airport.
“Apart from the positive impact of foreign direct investments, the spin-off effects are what are really important to the country and the economy. Jamaica’s tourism sector is almost unique in the Caribbean in terms of the linkages with other areas of the economy, agriculture in particular, (as well as) manufacturing and transportation,” Dr. Davies told JIS News.
