The Full Story

Prime Minister Bruce Golding, says Government is now putting in place guidelines, for the privatisation of the Port of Kingston, as it is the Government’s view that private sector interests are better able to manage these facilities while still being able to support and conform to the broad national objectives of the country.
Mr Golding said privatisation is a philosophy that has the full support of the Government and is part of its broad policy framework. “In the same way that Sangster International Airport has been successfully privatized, we intend to apply the same approach in dealing with the Norman Manley International airport and to go even further. We have begun to put together plans for the privatisation of the Kingston Port”.
Mr Golding was speaking this afternoon (Feb 18) at a ceremony at the Sangster International Airport, at which King Juan Carlos 1of Spain unveiled a plaque commemorating the expansion of the airport’s facilities, made possible by assistance provided by Spanish investors. This was one of the many activities shared by King Juan Carlos 1 and Queen Sofia on the second and final of their two day State visit to Jamaica.
The ceremony was attended by Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Professor Sir Kenneth Hall and Lady Hall, several Government Ministers, and Montego Bay’s civic and community leaders.
Mr Golding commended MBJ Airports Limited for the investments it made, the leadership provided and the excellent management provided. He also commended the Airports Authority, the construction companies, the Civil Aviation Authority, the workers -all of whom he said worked assiduously to complete the Sangster International Airport expansion project in the time it was completed.
