Glenmuir High School Hosts Open Day

As part of activities to mark its 50th anniversary, Glenmuir High School in Clarendon on Tuesday (Nov.18), staged an Open Day, to showcase the work and accomplishments of the institution over the years.
Various groups and departments within the school mounted exhibits, which demonstrated the school’s prowess in academic and non-academic areas.
Persons from the wider community, who shared with the Glenmuir school family on the occasion, were treated to rousing performances by the Creative Arts group, including cultural items, which had earned the school medals in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s Festival Competition.
Beverly McKenzie, who has taught at Glenmuir since January 1988, said it was heartening to see the level of interest demonstrated by the students over the years, not only with regard to academic pursuits, but creative arts, the environment, and other areas, which have helped to mould the students into creative, responsible and rounded individuals.
Mrs. McKenzie is also responsible for the Environmental Club, whose members proudly showed off the various projects on which they were working, including the making of paper, and developing alternative fuel, from plants.
Meanwhile, Chairperson for Clarendon’s Youth Council, Lakshmi Saranatham, who has worked with Glenmuir over the years, said that the institution was rated as the top school in Central Jamaica.
Ms. Saranatham, who is Link Patron with the Red Cross Society, said that the students participate fully in all the activities of the Red Cross, including culinary competitions and the National Youth Rally, and have won several trophies.
Glenmuir’s celebratory activities continued yesterday (Nov. 20) with an awards banquet at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, while a musical production dubbed ‘Spirit on Fire’ will be held at the school on November 22 and 29.
