The Full Story

Garvey Maceo High School in Clarendon is to benefit from several development projects valued at $7.5 million, to be funded by the Sports Development Foundation, National Commercial Bank (NCB), Digicel and Jamalco.
This was announced by Principal, David Brown at the school’s 25th anniversary banquet, held on May 21 at the Hotel Versalles in May Pen.
“At this time, the Sports Development Foundation is planning to come on board with us to help us refurbish our playfield. We are talking to Digicel and it would appear that they may give us two classrooms. We’re also talking with NCB, which has already committed itself to providing our cafeteria with all the chairs needed, and the big news is from Jamalco, which has given us a letter of undertaking to provide us with a school bus,” he said.
According to Mr. Brown, the 35-seater bus is valued at $3 million, the chairs for the cafeteria are valued at $500,000, the rehabilitation of the playfield would cost about $2.5 million, and the two classrooms could cost some $1.5 million. He noted that all the projects should be in place by the end of the year.
The Principal pointed out that emphasis was being placed on infrastructural development at the school, which should also help to improve the general performance of the students.
In his address, Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Omar Davies said there are obligations and responsibilities by teachers, parents and students to raise the educational level throughout the country.
“Too many students are taking opportunities offered to them for granted and they do not realize that an opportunity missed is very hard to recapture. Too many parents believe that having delivered the child to the school door, their obligations are over, and too many of them believe that education is the sole responsibility of the school,” he said.
He challenged all the stakeholders to play their role in ensuring that the possibilities to develop young individuals are realized.
Some 16 persons were honoured by the school for their dedicated service, including retirees, ancillary staff, administrative staff, and past and present chairmen.
Garvey Maceo was established on May 19, 1980 through a bilateral agreement between the governments of Jamaica and Cuba.
