Further Development in Store for Half-Way Tree

The transformation of Half Way Tree into a major commercial and financial hub could enter a new phase soon if Belgian company Besix, developers of the Half Way Tree Transportation Centre, gets the nod to construct a commercial and office complex consisting of two twenty storey buildings, on lands adjacent to the new transportation centre. Company directors presented their proposal to Prime Minister Bruce Golding at Jamaica House on (Mon. Jan. 14).
In welcoming the proposal, Mr. Golding said the government was committed to establishing Jamaica as an international financial centre, as this was pivotal to reenergizing and creating economic energy. He said a project of this nature could serve as a catalyst for further economic development, adding that every new investment must be used to leverage other investments. He said downtown Kingston would not be left out and that on Tuesday (Jan. 15), the government will sign a contract for the construction of an Urban Transportation Centre in the area.
Mr. Golding said special attention would have to be given to the possible impact the planned commercial and office development would have on the existing urban space in Half Way Tree and what additional infrastructure would be required. He has asked the Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister, James Robertson, to meet with personnel of key investment and planning agencies of government to look at the concept and its implications, and suggest ways in which the project could be realized.
The team which is scheduled to meet at Jamaica House this afternoon and will involve representatives of the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation, Urban Development Corporation, Jamaica Trade and Invest, Planning Institute of Jamaica and the Ministry of Transport and Works.
Construction of the commercial and office development is estimated to cost approximately 250 Million Euros. It will accommodate two levels of parking for 2000 cars, shopping and office space. A 120 room hotel will also be included.
