Fund-Raising Brunch in Atlanta for Health Mission

March 18, 2010

The Full Story

The Atlanta-Montego Bay Sister Cities Committee will host its annual fund-raising brunch on Sunday, March 21, at the Atlanta City Hall Atrium, downtown, Georgia.
Jamaica’s Honorary Consul in Atlanta, Mr. Vin Martin, who also chairs the Sister City Committee, told JIS News that proceeds will be used to offset the cost of the annual health mission to Montego Bay in October, which is now in its 17th year.
Mr. Martin said that a large portion of the medicine to be donated to the patients will be purchased from pharmaceutical companies in Jamaica, while some will be shipped to Jamaica in advance of the team’s arrival.
He pointed out that over the past 16 years, the mission has served in excess of 39,000 patients in St. James and neighbouring parishes. It is also estimated that during this period, approximately $35 million in medical supplies and services have been donated to patients in Montego Bay by the Health Committee.
The mission is undertaken in association with the St. James Parish Council, and is facilitated by the St. James Health Department. It is one of the major events staged to coincide with Montego Bay’s commemoration of achieving city status in October, 1980.
Mr. Martin noted that entertainment for this year’s event will include performances by several gospel artistes, backed by a local band, and a display of fashions by local models.
The Atlanta-Montego Bay Sister Cities Committee is the oldest Caribbean organisation in Atlanta, having been established in 1972 by reciprocal agreements between the Mayors of Atlanta and Montego Bay. It is one of 18 members of the Atlanta Sister Cities Commission.
