Fresh Start through Sports Camp for Innercity Youth

The ‘Jamaican Advantage Thru Sports for Youth’-JASY is to be launched on June 29, by Prime Minister Bruce Golding at the Sir Frank Worrell Field at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies.
The one-week programme will provide a recreational sports camp for a number of youth in the Kingston community who have been benefitting from the St. Patrick’s Foundation school Year and summer programme activities. The Foundation is partnering with the Youth Ministry of the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsford New York. Over 100 young people between the ages of 9-15, who are served by the St. Patrick’s Ministry, are expected to benefit.
Programme Directors, mentors and Counsellors will be drawn from youth members of the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsford and the St Patrick’s Foundation.
The National Transformation Programme, Fresh Start, headed by the Reverend Al Miller has endorsed the project and will be another partner working alongside the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, and a number of private sector sponsors.
The programme will utilize sports training as a vehicle to improve self esteem, fitness, physical well-being, team work, Christian values and cross cultural learning. Participants will be divided into small groups and will be rotated through four different camp activities each day. They will also receive instruction, practice, encouragement and recognition for their accomplishments.
