Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Senator Anthony Hylton, has said he was pleased with the appointment of former Information Minister, Burchell Whiteman as Jamaica’s new High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK).
Senator Hylton told a community meeting at the Jamaican High Commission in London on December 5, that Mr. Whiteman had the right mix of skills to be a successful High Commissioner.
The Minister said that from his experiences living, working and visiting the UK, he knew there were particular skills which a High Commissioner needed.”We need someone who is prepared to get out and interface with the community in their various areas; someone who will actively engage the community. We need someone who is prepared to work with the community, to listen to their concerns and translating them into meaningful representation, whether it be with the powers that be here or in Jamaica,” he said.
Senator Hylton said that the United Kingdom community has been an important part of the Diaspora. “Everything I have learnt suggest to me that the main reason is that we have some of Jamaica’s most committed and loyal people residing here,” he noted. Meanwhile, the Jamaica Diaspora UK group has welcomed the appointed of Mr. Whiteman as High Commissioner.
“The Jamaica Diaspora UK welcomes the appointment of the Honourable Burchell Whiteman as the new Jamaican High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Mr. Whiteman, who has been an outstanding public servant and educator, is well known for this dignity and integrity. We look forward to working with him as we move forward in building a strong viable UK Diaspora movement,” the group said.
