Flour and Rice Back on the Shelves

August 24, 2007

The Full Story

Flour and rice should be back on the shelves today (August 24), following quick restoration of power to the Jamaica Flour Mills Limited in East Kingston by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo).
Managing Director of the Jamaica Flour Mills, Derrick Nembhard, told JIS News in an interview that the company was able to produce the required amount of flour and rice “between 6:00 p.m., when the power was restored, and 7:00 a.m. this morning.” He noted that 6,000 bags of flour and 2,000 bags of bulk flour, the equivalent of 200,000 lbs, are now on their way to bakeries and the island’s stores, as well as 2,000 bags of rice, all of which were produced overnight. “We’re producing now, as we speak,” Mr. Nembhard said.
The company reported yesterday (August 23), that a shortage of the commodities was looming, as it was unable to manufacture the products to meet consumer demands, due to a lack of electricity. Minister of Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce, Phillip Paulwell toured the mills today, where he got a first hand look at the supplies. Many of the island’s stores had started to report shortages, following frantic stocking of the items, which was precipitated by Hurricane Dean last weekend.
