Five community roads in Hanover Western have been identified for repairs and will be allocated $2 million each to fund programmed remedial work.
The roads are Clinic Hill/Russell Lane, Green Island to Prospect Square, Green Island to Grange, Lucea to Dundee Pen and Kendal to Cessnock.
In her contribution to the 2024/25 State of the Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday (October 16), Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, Tamika Davis, welcomed work to be carried out under the Government’s Shared Prosperity through Accelerated Improvement to our Road Network (SPARK) Programme.
“This initiative, once implemented, will effect dramatic improvements to the road infrastructure, not only in Hanover Western but across the length and breadth of Jamaica,” she said.
The MP noted that work under the SPARK Programme will be complemented by the Government’s Relief Emergency Assistance and Community Help (REACH) Programme.
Meanwhile, Ms. Davis said several roads across the constituency have been repaired and rehabilitated.
“Approximately one kilometre of roadway from Middlesex to McLaren Gate was rehabilitated at a cost of $10 million. One kilometre of roadway was also done on the Riley to Bushmouth corridor… and was rehabilitated at a cost of $16 million,” she added.
The Damally Road was also rehabilitated and patching done through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) on the Cave Valley, Mount Peace and Kew roads.
Ms. Davis noted that, for years, students and other pedestrians travelling from the Hanover Parish Library to the town of Lucea have had to contend with narrow winding roads and significant vehicular traffic.
“To address this dangerous situation, we are currently undertaking a project that will see a sidewalk being constructed along this roadway to facilitate the safe movement of our children,” she advised.
