First Festival Queen Passes on

The Full Story

Former Principal of G.C. Foster College, in St. Catherine, and the first winner of the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen title, Lydia Malcolm, has died.
Ms. Malcolm died in St. Luke’s Hospice in Kenton, England, after a long battle with cancer. She was 59 years old.
She won the inaugural Festival Queen contest in 1975 but moved to London to take up a scholarship, leaving her runner-up, Pamela Alvaranga, to complete her reign.
In December 1986, she became Principal of the G. C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport in Spanish Town, a post she held until 1990.
The funeral service for Ms. Malcolm will be held in London on Friday, May 21. A Memorial Service of Thanksgiving will also be held at the G.C. Foster College gymnasium on Sunday, May 23.
