October 28, 2003

The Full Story

Fire Safety Awareness Week is being celebrated in Clarendon under the theme: ‘Awareness – the key for a fire safe community’. The week, which began on October 26, will end on November 1.
The week of activities commenced with a national church service at the Power of Faith Ministries Church in Portmore, with the Clarendon office taking part.
The launching ceremony for the parish was held on Monday, October 27 at the Central High School, with students from Denbigh High, Osbourne Store and Greenpark Primary and Junior High schools also participating in the event.
In his address at the ceremony, District Officer for Fire Prevention, Livingston Morgan, pointed out that about 31 fire hydrants had been repaired, in an effort to improve the service to the citizens.
He pointed out that this exercise had been undertaken since the establishment of the Fire and Emergency Committee in June this year, with the specific mandate of ensuring fire safety in the communities. Mr. Morgan implored those present to play their part in fire prevention by utilizing safe measures in handling combustible materials.
“We have launched this week of activities to enhance your awareness of fire safety and hope that what you will learn, will help to save the lives of those in your homes and community,” he said.
Other activities for the week include, fire safety awareness sessions, such as fire drills at Frankfield, Freetown, Chapelton and Watsonton Primary, Greenpark and Hayes Primary and Junior High schools and the children’s home in Chapelton; an exhibition at the May Pen fire station, and a firefighters awards function to be held at the Hotel Versalles on Thursday, October 30.
