Owner and Operator of Salisbury Cosmeceuticals, Carol Robinson, is hoping that participation in the 2019 Tourism Linkages Speed Networking Event will earn her a share of the more than US$600 billion, for which wellness and health tourism is estimated.

The industry, according to data from the Global Wellness Institute, is forecast to grow at a rate of 7.5 per cent yearly and is expected to reach US$919 billion by the year 2022.

Locally, Jamaica has been positioning itself to tap into the global wellness market, which has the potential to grow to an estimated US$4.2 trillion.

Acutely aware of these numbers, Mrs. Robinson tells JIS News that the annual event, which is designed to strengthen the linkages between the tourism industry and local manufacturers and suppliers of goods and services to the sector, is “good for business”.
“It lands you at the door of the people with the most interest,” Mrs. Robinson says, referring to the hotels and their associated spas.

The Salisbury Cosmeceuticals owner, who uses local herbs and spices to make lotions, foot soaks for diabetics and skin toners for those affected by acne and eczema, says her products were well received at last year’s staging of the event.

“If you put them on the supermarket shelf or in the pharmacy, very few people are interested, but if you take it to that group such as spas, and the tourists who are here for the wellness and the earthy, then you are in business, because there is an appreciation for this,” she adds.

Mrs. Robinson, who stumbled into the cosmeceutical industry after losing 1,000 pounds of sorrel due to rain one year, is advising more entrepreneurs to register to become a part of the speed networking event, as it “puts you in touch with your market”.

“You find out more of what people or your clients are looking for, based on your conversations, so you are not operating blindly. You can also better position yourself for the market you are in, or endeavour to venture into,” she says.

Meanwhile, owner of Mighty’s Spice Jamaica Limited, Pauline Mighty, also notes that the speed networking event is good for business.

She tells JIS News it allows for all the important business connections to be made, which can enure to the development of the individual business.

Mrs. Mighty, who produces dried and bottled herbs and spices, says since her participation in last year’s event, at least one hotel has reached out to her to have products supplied to them.

For her part, Director of the Tourism Linkages Network, Carolyn McDonald Riley, says the fourth staging of the event, which is to be held on March 20, at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St. James, will feature new players.

“This year, we are hoping that there are some skill sets that we can benefit from on both sides (buying and supplying), so we’re bringing in the information technology (IT) professionals that will assist with communication on both sides. The IT professionals have been requested by both sides,” she says.

Added to these individuals, tour operators and members of the cruise ship industry will, for the first time, be included in the event to increase the offerings that persons can do business with.

Mrs. McDonald Riley says the Ministry continues to stage the event because of its proven success, as “a number of persons have indicated that they have had contracts ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions”.

“I think it is doing very well. Everybody who participates is willing to come back… and although you have some of the same persons coming, a lot of times they have new products to offer,” she tells JIS News.
