The Full Story

Twenty-one cases of the Zika virus have been confirmed in Jamaica, and the government continues to implement several measures to combat the mosquito-borne illness.

Under phase 2 of the Ministry of Health (MOH) Public Health Response programme, the health sector is being equipped to handle any increase in severe cases of the virus.

Additionally, through the National Health Fund, the MOH will be providing $1 million to each Member of Parliament to support Zika activities at the constituency level.

This funding will be available as of July 1.

There is a lot that the government is doing, and you too can play a part in helping to make Jamaica Zika free.

The most effective action you can take is to keep the environment clean.

Take Action!

The Aedes aegypti mosquito which carries the virus breeds in any container where water is allowed to settle.

The most common breeding sites are drums, tyres, flower pots and containers in and around homes, schools, workplaces and communities. To reduce or eliminate breeding sites here is a list of things you can do:

  • Check premises weekly for water-filled containers.
  • Throw away or recycle water containers that are not needed.
  • Containers such as drums should be tightly covered, turned over or placed under a roof.
  • Clean flower vases and water containers for pets weekly and empty water from saucers under potted plants.
  • Fill tree holes and other cavities in plants with soil or sand.
  • Repair all leaking pipes.
