Farmers in Portland Get $2.5 Million from CIDA

November 1, 2003

The Full Story

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has donated over $2.5 million to help small farmers in Portland who lost property during the 2001 flood rains. The money is being administered by the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS). Thelma Williams, JAS Organizer for Portland, said over 100 farmers in the communities of Bybrook, Chepstowe and Belvedere benefited from the funds, which were disbursed in two instalments earlier this year and went towards the planting of fruit and lumber trees and constructing ditches and other barriers to prevent soil erosion.
Declaring that the assistance was made possible as a result of representation made to CIDA by the JAS, Ms. Williams said efforts were being made to procure further assistance for the other JAS branches in Portland.
Meanwhile, she said, the JAS was putting measures in place to increase agricultural production in the parish, and the recently formed Portland Praedial Larceny Committee was in the process of hiring agricultural wardens as part of efforts to reduce farm theft.
