Falmouth and Lauderhill, Florida to Become Sister Cities

The relationship between the cities of Falmouth in Trelawny and Lauderhill in Florida will be further strengthened when they formally become sister cities on Friday (Sept. 29). A formal twinning ceremony will be held in Braco, Trelawny.
Jamaican national Dale Holness, Vice Mayor and City Commissioner of Lauderhill, told JIS News that both cities share commonalities and this formal relationship would enhance the ties that exist.
He said he intended to use the platform created by the twinning of the cities, to foster better relations in the areas of sports, culture, education and health. He indicated that this opportunity could also further economic development in trade and business ventures, improving linkages and investments to benefit both areas, as Jamaica already shared a strong business relationship with South Florida.
Both cities, according to Mr. Holness, were undergoing a “renaissance”, with Falmouth targeted for redevelopment particularly in the area of tourism, while Lauderhill, which is home to one of the highest concentration of Caribbean nationals in Florida, had undergone its own share of redevelopment.
With its diverse population, Lauderhill is known for its many ethnic festivals and is slated to become the cricket capital of Florida, with plans in place for the construction of an international cricket stadium in the city.
Commissioner Holness, who was instrumental in the proposal for twinning the cities, expressed his pride, as a Jamaican national, and indicated his interest in “making this relationship as broad-based as possible serving both cities well.”
Meanwhile, as part of a weekend of activities to mark the twinning of the cities, the first annual ‘Air Jamaica Cup’ will be held on Saturday (Sept. 30) at the Trelawny multipurpose Stadium. A United States invitational team and the Jamaican National team will compete in the friendly cricket match.
