As part of the activities for Civil Service Week (November 19 to 25), an Expo and Concert were held today (Tuesday, November 21), at Emancipation Park in Kingston.
Director of Special Projects, Employee Relations and Benefits Unit, Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, Sylvia Shirley Sterling, told JIS News that the annual event aims to highlight the work and myriad services within the public sector.
“This forms part of the Civil Service Week tradition. The whole idea of Civil Service Week is to highlight some of what we do, because persons may not have a good idea of what public-sector employees do, so we thought it a good idea to bring the services to the people in the park in one space and also to interact with the public and make it easier for them to access these services,” she said.
Mrs. Sterling added that this year’s expo also aims to promote the Public Sector Transformation and Modernisation programme.
“In our transformation, we are looking to offer quality public service, not just any service. It fits perfectly with the theme of transformation of the public sector, which will benefit Jamaica overall,” she said.
The expo featured 28 booths from several private- and public-sector agencies. Among the ministries and agencies participating in the expo were the Ministries of Finance and the Public Service, Justice, Labour and Social Security, and Transport and Mining.
There were exhibitions by several public bodies, including the Forestry Department, the Electoral Commission, the Administrator General’s Department, HEART Trust/NTA and the National Housing Trust (NHT).
The concert was staged by public-sector workers.
Other activities for the Week include a Quiz Competition on November 23 and an afterwork lyme on November 24.
Additionally, Tarrant Baptist Basic School has been selected as a social project, with the Jamaica Civil Service Planning Committee donating bedding and other items to the children.
The Week is being celebrated under the theme ‘Diligently and Holistically Advancing Quality Public Services for a Better Jamaica’.
