European Commission Assists With Rebuilding Efforts

The European Commission is to make some $3.3 billion dollars available to the Government of Jamaica to assist with relief and reconstruction efforts following the passage of Hurricane Ivan last month.Charge d’ Affaires for the European Delegation in Jamaica Ambjorn Berglund made the disclosure at a handing over ceremony at the Boston Primary and Infant School in Portland on Wednesday, October 13.
Mr. Berglund said a grant payment of 11.1 million Euros or J$.08 billion was made available to the Jamaican Government at the end of September as a first installment of the European funded general budgetary support programme. He said an additional 8 million Euros would be disbursed during the current fiscal year.
Mr. Berglund informed that a further 25 million Euros or 1.9 billion Jamaican dollars had been earmarked as emergency assistance to Jamaica, pending the government’s final report on the hurricane damage. He noted that this report was to be presented shortly, adding that the European Union (EU) was in strong solidarity with Jamaica as the country continued reconstruction efforts.
He said the EU was at the forefront of donor efforts to bring relief to devastated areas and to help with reconstruction and rehabilitation programmes. Mr. Berglund emphasized that the European delegation was in the process of working out the details of those interventions with the national authorities, in order to ensure that all the facilities of the partnership agreement with the country was used to their fullest extent.
