Emergency Shelters Open in Savanna-La-Mar

Parish Disaster Co-ordinator, Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) in Westmoreland, Vilma Tate, is reporting that two emergency shelters have been opened in Savanna-la-Mar to accommodate persons affected by the heavy rains.
The shelters are located at Godfrey Stewart High and the Savanna-la-Mar Primary schools.
Speaking in an interview with JIS News, Ms. Tate informed that five persons have been hospitalized after being hit by flying debris, as a result of the persistent heavy rainfall combined with a freak tornado, which affected the town last night (Sept. 28).
Four persons sought refuge from the deluge at the Savanna-la-Mar Fire Department.
Several buildings were damaged with the historic Savanna-la-Mar Baptist Church flattened. Houses along Darling and Beckford Streets, the United Church Hall and the Wesleyan Holiness Church were severely damaged, while a number of businesses on Great Georges Street were flooded out.
Flooding was also reported at McNeil Lands, Three Miles River, Strathbogie, Gooden’s River Road, Llandeloy, Little London, Broughton, the Albany Housing Scheme, Georges Plain, Frome, Ricketts River, area among others. The Margarita and the Cabarita rivers have over flowed their banks.
