The Portland Disaster Committee will be carrying out earthquake drills at three schools and one training institution in the parish this week, as part of activities to mark Earthquake Awareness Week.
The drills started today (Jan. 15) at the Hill Preparatory school in Port Antonio and will continue tomorrow (Jan. 16) at the Shebian Preparatory School; on Wednesday (Jan. 17) at the Port Antonio High School; and on Thursday (Jan. 18) at the Port Antonio Design and Training Centre.
Earthquake Awareness Week is being observed from January 14 to 20 under the theme: ‘Prepare now, don’t wait, be ready for the next earthquake’ and activities got underway yesterday with special service at the Port Antonio Friends Church.
Other activities for the week include a discussion session on the local cable television service on Tuesday to sensitise the general public about earthquakes and mitigation measures.
The Portland Parish Library has mounted an exhibit, which will run throughout the week and will be hosting a special discussion session on Friday (Jan. 19).
Portland’s Disaster Coordinator, Denise Lewis told JIS News that a simulation exercise was planned as a part of the week of activities but had to be postponed due to unavoidable circumstances.
She said however, that plans were being put in place to stage the event soon after the conclusion of Earthquake Awareness Week.
The Disaster Coordinator exhorted residents of the parish to participate in the activities planned, noting that they were designed to increase awareness about earthquakes and improve preparedness measures.
