Drug Abuse Prevention Project Gets $3 Million

The Integrated Drug Abuse Prevention Project has received $3 million as set out in the 2004/05 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives.
The objective of the project is to strengthen drug abuse prevention for Jamaican youth through an integrated approach involving community, educational institutions and long-term peer groups.
Anticipated physical targets for the project this financial year include formalizing and disbursing grant to 16 Community Action Development Committees (CODACs).
Achievements to date include the formation of six active Community Action Development Committee groups and the printing of posters, wall charts, curriculum guides, booklets, activity books and comic books to be used in schools and community prevention programmes.
This is in addition to the training of 14 young persons at risk in hospitality management and three in cosmetology. Another 15 are being trained in welding and eight others in information technology.
Funded by the European Development Fund (EDF), the project commenced in December 1999 and is being implemented by the National Council on Drug Abuse (NCDA).
