The Full Story

Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, will be hosting two disaster preparedness and mitigation town halls in Clarendon next week.

The community sessions will be held at the Edwin Allen High School in Frankfield on Wednesday (September 20) and at the St. Gabriel’s Anglican Church Hall, Church Street, on Thursday (September 21).

The meetings, which are expected to get under way at 5:00 pm., will be used to sensitise residents to the need to be prepared for natural disasters, particularly those in areas prone to flooding.

They are being held against the background of recent flooding in Clarendon due to heavy rains as well as the fact that the active portion of the 2017 hurricane season is under way.

Minister McKenzie told JIS News that the devastation in the United States and the wider region caused by hurricanes Harvey and Irma “is enough of a reminder that residents in flood-prone areas need to take hurricane preparedness seriously”.

“Again, I am urging individuals to heed all warnings coming from the necessary authorities, especially the warnings to evacuate. If persons in the Caribbean and the United States had not adhered to evacuation warnings during hurricanes Harvey and Irma, the death toll would have been far greater.

“I am fully aware that some persons might have reservations about going to designated shelters; therefore, I am suggesting that, wherever possible, they make arrangements to stay with friends and families so they can be safe until the passage of a hurricane,” he told JIS News.

For further details, persons are encouraged to call the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development at 754-0992-9, the Clarendon Municipal Corporation at 986-2216/ 986- 2234/986-2403, or the Social Development Commission (SDC) Clarendon Parish Office at 902-8126/986-2453.
