Diaspora critical to Jamaica – Johnson

Jamaica’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK), His Excellency Anthony Johnson, has commended the contribution of the UK Diaspora, noting that they play a critical role in the country’s development.
“The Diaspora is critical for Jamaica. These people have changed the face of Britain after World War II. In fact they contributed to the multicultural nature of Britain,” Mr. Johnson stated.
He was speaking at an awards ceremony to mark Black History Month held recently at the Hudawi Cultural Centre in Huddersfield.
High Commissioner Johnson made an appeal for support to the island in the aftermath of the damage and displacement caused by Tropical Storm Nicole.
He also urged the Jamaicans to register on the Jamaica Diaspora web portal at www.jamaicadiasporaconnect.com. The internet portal, which was formally launched last month at the High Commission in London, is part of the Knowledge Networks for Connecting Jamaica with its Diaspora project, which is a partnership between the Jamaican Diaspora UK and the Mona School of Business.
It has a database of projects in Jamaica, a skills bank, discussion forums and a list of upcoming events in Jamaica and the UK.
The High Commissioner also reiterated his call for more Jamaicans in the UK to start their own businesses and to seek investment opportunities.
High Commissioner Johnson was in Huddersfield at the invitation of the Jamaican National Council and Shabach Outreach Ministries.
