As a mark of respect for sports hero, the Honourable Herbert McKenley, OM, who died last week Monday night, the 2007 Rural Area School Boys DaCosta Cup Football Finals between Garvey Maceo High School and Glenmuir High School have been postponed.
The DaCosta Cup finals would have taken place on Saturday 8th December the same day as the Official Funeral Service for Mr. McKenley.
The DaCosta Cup Finals will now be played on Wednesday 12th December at a venue to be announced. As a consequence of the postponement, this year’s Olivier Shield competed for by the top rural high school football team and the top Corporate area high school football team will be played in just one leg on Saturday, 15th December also at venue also to be announced.
Meanwhile, planning for Mr. McKenley’s Funeral is in the final stages with a dress rehearsal scheduled for Thursday 6th December. On Thursday, the Honourable Olivia “Babsy” Grange, Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, will also be giving a press briefing at which she will update the media and outline what is expected of those covering the Official Funeral. The press briefing which will be held at the Press Room, Office of the Prime Minister, will start at 10:00 a.m.
Thursday will also see the start of a three-day Official Period of Mourning for Mr. McKenley and the opening of Condolence Books for two days here in Jamaica.
The Books are being placed at the headquarters of the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA), the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS), National Arena in Kingston; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in New Kingston; the Western Regional Office of the Prime Minister in Montego Bay; Calabar High School on Red Hills Road in St. Andrew and the Jamaica Labour Party Headquarters at Belmont Road in Kingston.
Signing will be between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day.
Already Condolence Books have been opened at Jamaica’s 18 Foreign Missions around the world.A wake for Mr. McKenley will also take place at the National Arena on Friday night, 7th December.
Persons attending the Official Funeral Service for Mr. McKenley should also note that a shuttle bus service will be available from the National Arena where the service will be held on Saturday, 8th December to National Heroes Park where he will be interred.
Mr. McKenley leaves behind Widow Beverley and four children.
