The Full Story

Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sport, Olivia Grange, has announced the creation of the Herb McKenley Endowment Fund to award outstanding Jamaican athletes for their contribution to sports.
She made the disclosure on Saturday (Feb. 16), at a track and field invitational event hosted by the University of the West Indies (UWI) as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations. The fund has been created in honour of Olympian Herb McKenley who died in November last year.
Miss Grange described the track and field invitational as a fine example of co-operation between regional neighbours who share common challenges which required mutual cooperation in order to overcome many obstacles. Athletes from across the University’s three campuses and local high schools and colleges, participated in the event.
Professor Nigel Harris, Vice Chancellor of the UWI said the track meet was aimed at honouring the life and excellence of Herb McKenley. He added that the university remained committed to sustaining the light rising from the west. In the meantime, Principal of the Mona Campus of the UWI Professor Gordon Shirley, said consideration would be given to the development of the Mona Bowl to complement the sports programme at that campus.
