Cricket World Cup has CARICOM’S Full Support – States PM

Prime Minister P.J. Patterson has assured the cricketing fraternity of the full support of CARICOM Heads of Government in ensuring that the staging of Cricket World Cup 2007 will be done in accordance with the highest international standards.
Speaking at the signing of the host agreement between the International Cricket Council and the West Indies Cricket Board at Jamaica House on Monday (Nov. 3), Mr. Patterson said the tournament has the full backing of CARICOM Heads, adding that it was an honour for the region to have been selected to host the event.
“CARICOM Heads welcome this event and from the very start have given the WICB our full backing in bringing the tournament to our Caribbean shores. We recognize the honour which has been bestowed on us in the Caribbean by being selected to host this major event,” Mr. Patterson said.
He said visitors would be accorded the hospitality, ambience, music, cuisine and the unique flavour for which the Caribbean is renowned. Mr. Patterson added that this along with the exhilarating play of West Indian cricketers, should make the 2007 tournament a memorable occasion.
President of the ICC Mr. Ehsan Mani who also spoke at the function noted that the greatest show in cricket was on its way to the Caribbean. He said these were exciting times for cricket and that new players and new teams had emerged that would add the next chapter to the game. He said the West Indies team has always graced the game with passion and joy and it was therefore fitting that the region has been chosen to host the 2007 tournament.
Sixteen teams as scheduled to participate in the Cricket World Cup, which will be held across eight islands. Some one hundred thousand spectators are expected to attend the matches which will be viewed by over one billion viewers around the world.
