Covered Seating area for Children Attending Court in Yallahs

Residents of St. Thomas will construct a covered seating area at the Yallahs Courthouse as part of Labour Day activities on May 24.
The National Labour Day project, which will cost some $250,000, was chosen by the St. Thomas Labour Day Planning Committee.
Mayor of Morant Bay, Hanif Brown told JIS News that the seats were being constructed for children, who attend court.
He noted that representatives of the Child Care Division and the Probation Office had expressed concern about the inadequate seating at a recent parish Labour Day Planning Committee meeting.
“The area is small and from time to time, children have had to be in the sun and standing under conditions that the people of this parish do not believe is acceptable,” he said.
According to the Mayor, the initiative was chosen in keeping with the theme for Labour Day 2010: ‘Our children.show them that we care’.
“We intend to cover this facility and we are hoping that it will be able to seat 50 to 60 children including adults on a normal court day while they are waiting for their case to be called up,” the Mayor said.
He informed that the Committee will be working closely with teams from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), the National Works Agency (NWA), and the Roads and Works Department of the St. Thomas Parish Council to ensure the successful completion of the project.
Mayor Brown said that the committee is “actively soliciting the cooperation of the business community and other stakeholders in putting together some resources,” to assist with the work.
Meanwhile, a Workers’ Week thanksgiving church service will be held at the Yallahs Baptist Church on Sunday, May 16, starting at 10:00 a.m. The Mayor is encouraging members of community organisations and church groups to attend.
